Inbound Freight Delays - Cancellation of Flights Caused by Iceland’s Volcanic Eruption
Update to the Volcanic Eruption notice - affecting European airspace.
The eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland is still causing disruption to flights across Europe. European Air Traffic Control has officially commented that 5,000 out of normally 24,000 flights are currently operating across European airspace as of today.
The latest update received at 9pm 18th April (AUS time 7am, NZ time 9am 19th April), European Air Traffic Control has closed airspace around major parts of Europe. This includes Belgium, parts of Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, parts of France, most of Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Northern Italy, Netherlands, parts of Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
Southern Europe, including Spain, Portugal, the southern Balkan area, southern Italy, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey are open and flights are taking place in these areas.
The latest observation and forecasts of the area of possible ash contamination indicates some positive changes in the coming hours.
Air freight forwarders expect that once flights resume there will be a backlog of cargo from those affected airports. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as soon as information is received from the respective Authorities.
We can only apologise for any delays in freight forwarding that may affect some customers. However this situation is beyond our control.
